Highlights of the Kindergarten Handbook
This handbook contains information we feel will be helpful throughout the year. Please see SCS handbook for additional information.
Academics
We have worked very hard to plan a complete, sequential academic program for your child. Our efforts will be directed toward guiding your child to his or her optimum learning potential. There will be four 9-week grading periods. We will be using the “Three Tier Reading” curriculum series (Journeys) to teach letter recognition and reading skills. We will also be using a manipulative based math curriculum (EngageNY). Science, Social Studies, and Health are combined into unit studies. All of the academic studies are carefully aligned to fulfill the Common Core standards as outlined by the Tennessee Department of Education.
Reporting Progress
Kindergarten students’ work is graded and sent home regularly. Report cards are issued at the end of each 9-week grading period. We encourage you to review your child’s papers, interims, notes, and report cards so you will be aware of his/her progress. You should make every effort to attend conferences that are scheduled. If you have concerns or questions, you may arrange for a conference by calling the school or writing a note to the teacher.
Arrival and Dismissal
School begins at 9:15 a.m. Students will be admitted into the building at 8:55 a.m. Students arriving late (after 9:15 a.m.) and students leaving early (before 3:35) must check in/out in the the office. School dismissal begins at 4:15 p.m. *You must notify your child’s teacher in writing if there is a change in your child’s dismissal.
Health
Please do not send medicine to school with your child. Only parents or legal caregivers may carry medicine to school and will be required to fill out a form in the office. Teachers are not allowed to dispense medicine to students.
Snack
Kindergarten classes have snack everyday. Please provide your child with a nutritious snack each day. Please LABEL SNACKS with your child’s name and separate snack items from lunch items. All leftover food will be discarded. *Candy/soda is not an acceptable snack. Water is preferred.
Visitors
All visitors must check in the front office and procure a visitor tag before entering the rest of the campus. Your cooperation is greatly appreciated.
Ways You Can Help
*Allow your child to do things for himself/herself.
*Help your child learn to tie his/her shoe laces.
*Listen actively to your child and expect them to actively listen to you.
*Check work daily and praise your child when you see progress. Practice with your child skills he or she has not mastered.
*Volunteer in our classrooms.
